On your first appointment a thorough medical history will be taken. This will include the nature of the symptoms you are currently experiencing but also any previous medical conditions that you may have or have suffered within the past. If you are on any medications or have had any previous investigations such as MRI or X-Rays then it would be helpful if you could bring details of these.
Following this a physical osteopathic examination will be performed. You will be asked to dress down to your underwear for the initial examination. Please bring a pair of shorts or a vest top if you feel more comfortable in these, alternatively we do provide paper examination gowns. The reason for dressing down on the initial examination is to allow the osteopath to observe spinal curves and posture that may be contributing to the problem. (On your second visit you will only be requested to dress down the area of the body that the osteopath will be treating.)
The examination will also include tests to assess the mobility of joints, palpation of muscles, orthopedic tests specific to certain structures and strength of muscles may also be tested. A combination of verbal and physical findings will aid in making a diagnosis. All of which will be explained to you prior to treatment.
The treatment plan will be discussed with you including short, medium and long term goals where appropriate. These may include rehabilitation exercises, stretches, postural advice or lifestyle changes.
It is not uncommon for people to respond differently after an osteopathic treatment. Some may feel instant relief while others may feel slightly sore. Soreness can last 24-48 hours before relief is felt as the body begins to adapt to the changes made.
If for any reason it’s decided that osteopathic treatment is not appropriate you will be referred to the appropriate healthcare professional.
